[00:00:00] Ghana is getting ready to launch its very own CBDC, that is Central Bank Digital Currency, which is known as the eCity later this year. Now this move follows years after development and puts Ghana at the forefront of digital currency adoption in Africa. Hey guys, I'm Adrian Daniels and welcome to another episode of Podbytes.

[00:00:22] Now, if you've been tuning into the Sound of Accra Podcast Fintech Friday series, you may have caught the conversation I had with Yandi Nomveti, who's the operations manager over at Binance Africa, in April 2024, where we discussed how the Ghanaian digital city was on a roadmap for 2025 and now it looks like it's actually happening. Now what sets the eCity apart is its focus on offline functionality.

[00:00:47] Now this personally could be a game changer for Ghana, where mobile penetration exceeds 100% but internet access is limited to about 70% of the population. Now the offline capability will make digital payments accessible to unbanked populations in rural areas, potentially revolutionizing financial inclusion in the country. Now the Bank of Ghana has been working this project for quite some time now, and they've even collaborated with companies such as G&D,

[00:01:15] which is a German security tech company, to test the eCity. Now this partnership has allowed Ghana to leverage technology that is already in place in countries such as Thailand, Singapore, and even in Brazil. However, the launch isn't set in stone just yet. The official rollout of the eCity depends on lawmakers passing legislation to legalize digital currency. Now this regulatory step is crucial for the project success and widespread adoption.

[00:01:45] Now Ghana puts it in line with a global trend in terms of the move that they're making. According to a report by G&D, 72% of central banks worldwide expect to issue a digital currency, whereas 48% are planning to do so within the next few years. Now it was also worth it that Ghana's West African neighbour, Nigeria, introduced its own CBDC, the eNaira, a few years ago. That is, three years ago.

[00:02:15] Now this regional competition could spur further innovation and adoption across West Africa. And also, the Bank of Ghana sees CBDCs as a future of digital payments, despite some central banks abandoning their CBDC plans in favour for instant payment systems. Now interestingly enough, the Bank for International Settlements argues that CBDCs could eventually make stablecoins obsolete, raising questions about their long-term viability in the face of government bank digital currencies.

[00:02:44] Now, it's clear that Ghana's eCity project represents a significant step in the evolution of digital currencies in Africa. Now, success could pave the way for similar initiatives across the continent and beyond. Now, what do you think of today's Podbyte episode? How do you feel about other forms of money that's already in circulation in Ghana, such as fiat currency, that is, paper money, the actual physical cities that we use every day currently,
