Marketing vs Sales: Who Really Drives Growth?

Why do marketing and sales keep pointing fingers? Mike Adonteng explains the "push and pull" model of inbound marketing and outbound sales and how to get both teams working together.

  • Marketing is the "pull": it builds awareness of the brand, product and organisation, which brings in inbound enquiries.
  • Sales is the "push": outbound work such as research and heavy lifting. SDRs often pick up inbound leads and pass them on to salespeople.
  • The blame game: each side says "we're doing our job" while pointing at the other.
  • The takeaway: the best formula an organisation can build is a model where marketing appreciates the work of sales, and sales appreciates marketing.

Mike Adonteng: Marketing feels like they're doing the right jobs because obviously they're the ones that I call something push and pull. Yeah. Marketing are the ones who create awareness of the brand, the product, the organidation. And typically when you create awareness, it brings inbound. Right. So that's like the pull effect. Yeah. So, you know, I may be browsing and I see the sound of a crowd podcast through the work of your marketing person. let me go and investigate who this person, I sound of crowd. I like that. Let me make an enquiry. That's the marketing inbound. Yeah. Right. And then typically when it comes inbound, The SDRs will pick it up sometimes and then work from there. Then you've got salespeople, right? Salespeople for me, again, when I say sales, I mean, the ones that are doing the outbound stuff, the push. So they're doing the heavy lifting research, know, the things I talked about earlier on. There's this thing where marketing always points fingers to say, no, we're doing our job, but you're not the ones, right? And the salespeople say, no, no, but we're getting, you know. or crap, lees or, and there's that thing. If you can find a model that makes marketing appreciate the work of sales and sales, that's the best formula that any organidation could ever put together.
